2014 MIGHTY UKE DAY, 4th annual Michigan Ukulele Festival

Hawaiian performance at the Canton Village Theatre Nov 16, 2013

The spirit of aloha is alive & well in Michigan! The Motor City Ukes joined the Hoaloha Dancers at the 2013 Canton International Festival, an event celebrating diversity in our community. We performed some standard hapa haole tunes like Hanalei Moon and Sophisticated Hula as well as Hawaiian language songs like Koke’e by Rev Dennis Kamakahi. At the after-show dinner, I was shocked to bump into a Hawaii friend from high school who’s living up here in Michigan, too - small world!

Under The Pines House Concert 9/7/13
This past weekend I had the opportunity to catch up with Jim (
Jumpin' Jim) & Liz Beloff and hearing and meeting Lil' Rev in person for the first time. I played a couple of tunes to start the evening before the Beloff's did a set of duets (Liz is a great singer!) and Lil' Rev blew everyone's socks off with his amazing gift of storytelling. Many thanks to Ben Hassenger!

Heritage of Aloha Festival

May 18, 19, 2013 Santa Fe Springs, CA
Had a wonderful time at the first annual Heritage of Aloha festival playing with young up-and-coming Hawaiian singer and ukulele strummer Kalyn Aolani - Troy Fernandez (Ka’au Crater Boys) even jumped in on bass with us! The festival featured an ukulele contest and invited me and Troy to be two of the judges; it was a huge success and they’re sure to be swamped with even more entrants next year.

ABOUT ME

A graduate of the University of Hawaii music program, I’ve been

teaching ukulele since 1994. I was fortunate enough to have met and studied with the legendary jazz ukulele musician Bill Tapia, and most importantly, got to know him as a person. He was very much an influence on me in more ways than one.

I moved to California in 2000 and now call the South Bay of Los Angeles my home although I take every chance I get to visit my beloved Hawaiian islands.

It's hard learning to play 'ukulele from a book! Now's your chance to get started in a live class where you can learn at least ten songs in the first session alone!

Students must provide own ukulele (concert-tenor size). Don't have one? Get one at Dietz Brothers in Mahattan Beach, Opus Music in Torrance or the West L.A. Guitar Center (ask for Brian Lerner) and mention my name!

NEED MUSIC FOR YOUR SPECIAL EVENT?

Dear Mitch Chang,

A very special thank you for providing beautiful ukulele and Hawaiian slack key guitar music at our daughter’s wedding. Your arrangements and performance were amazing and perfect for both the ceremony and the cocktail hour.  Many of our guests commented on how sweet and great the music was. Thank you for sharing your talent and bringing the sounds of the islands to our Michigan wedding.

In appreciation,

Catherine Sweet and family
